Moving past the binary: co-creating new technological imaginaries for AI in the film industry

The conversation around Artificial Intelligence in the film industry often feels like a tug-of-war between two extremes. On one side, we hear that AI is an existential threat to craft and livelihood—the “AI is Evil” narrative. On the other, it’s hailed as a magic wand that will democratize storytelling and solve every production bottleneck—the “best thing since sliced bread” narrative.

In my research, I am more interested in exploring the messy, nuanced middle. That is why I am thrilled to announce that next weekend, March 7th and 8th 2026, I will be joining IATSE Local 891 in Vancouver for their AI Learning and Engagement Symposium.

Moving Past the Duality

On Saturday, March 7th, Gillian Russell and I will be hosting a workshop titled “Creative Future Imagining.” This session isn’t about technical tutorials or predicting the “inevitable.” Instead, it is an interactive co-creation session designed to help industry professionals push beyond the exhausted “Good vs. Bad” duality.

Our goal is to create a space where workers can actively shape the narratives of their own futures, in an attempt to understand how we can preserve the soul of the craft while navigating a shift as significant as the one imposed by the diffusion of AI.

Whether you are an editor wondering if you are now a curator or creator, or a union member interested in how AI affects collective bargaining, I hope to see you there.
